Our Annual Appeal
Make a difference… get involved today!
Dear Friends,
Do you remember times in your life when you received a book as a gift?
As you think of these times, I ask that you take a moment to imagine what your life might be like if you couldn't read. As you give thanks please consider giving the gift of helping an adult improve their reading skills and opening up a whole new world of opportunity in their lives.
Right now in Maine, there are an estimated 200,000 adults who struggle with reading. In Kennebec County, 1 out of 6 of our neighbors has difficulty understanding a prescription label, reading a recipe or newspaper or filling out a job application.
There are many reasons for low literacy ranging from learning disabilities that were not addressed in school, to family situations that provided little reading support during a child's formative years. Others have suffered from abuse, neglect or left school early due to their family's economic situation. Whatever the cause for low literacy, there are solutions.
For more than 35 years, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta has been providing free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring services to adults in the Kennebec Valley.
We need your help now more than ever to continue our mission of improving the literacy skills of people in our community. Our services are free, but expenses for books and materials continue to increase.
Give the Gift of Reading by making your donation today. If you prefer, you can designate your United Way contribution to LVA or make a secure on-line donation using the Donate button below.

Our Thanks
At your request, when you donate to LV of Greater Augusta, we will place a special bookplate in one of our library books with your dedication. This is especially nice if you have a specific book or type of story that is meaningful to you. Your gift will help support our efforts to make illiteracy a thing of the past.
