Attention Literacy Volunteers! FREE self-paced online training is now provided by Verizon Literacy University for potential volunteers, existing volunteers, and program directors & staff.

Trainer Certification System

The Trainer Certification System supports excellence in training by providing trainers with a path for growth and development in training skills and adult education practices. Currently, Trainer Certification and Supervising Trainer Certification are offered. To become a certified trainer, you will:

• tutor an adult student in basic literacy or English as a Second Language (ESL), or other basic skills
• apprentice with a certified supervising trainer
• participate in the LLA Trainer Workshop: Basic Training Skills or LVA Training of Trainers
• be recommended by your local literacy program

Once you are a certified trainer, you may register to become a certified supervising trainer. Certification as a supervising trainer qualifies you to mentor apprentice trainers through the certification process. To become a certified supervising trainer, you will:

• continue to tutor an adult student in basic literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), or other basic skills
• continue to conduct tutor training workshops
• participate in the Supervising Trainer Workshop
• guide an apprentice trainer through the certification process
• be recommended by your local literacy program

Trainer certification must be renewed every three years. Certification renewal is awarded based on the trainers continued activity and development. The Certification System is explained in greater detail in the Certification Manual and Certification Team Handbook. These materials are available for purchase through New Readers Press.
