Tutor Training

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta provides training to volunteers seeking to become tutors. There are two methods: Just in Time and Traditional.

Traditional Tutor Training

Interested volunteers receive intensive training through LV-A workshops offered twice a year in our Traditional Tutor Training programs. Trainings are generally 16 hours long, and are conducted over a series of workshops conducted for several hours each week over a period of several weeks. All training his held at the LV-Augusta office on Spruce Street.

We ask for a $30 donation to cover the cost of the book and other materials. Please see the new Calendar for the next upcoming Tutor Training event, or call Jenny Small at 626-3440.

Just in Time Tutor Training

The "Just in Time" tutor training approach is an alternative to the more traditional, longer tutor training workshops that we offer twice each year. This 4-hour workshop gives an orientation to the Literacy Volunteers organization and then focuses on adult learning theory and strategies to help learners read and write.

After the workshop, participants may decide to select a student and begin their on-the-job training with support from the Affiliate Director, or they may decide that they prefer to be a reading coach in one of our Community Literacy Labs.

All training his held at the LV-Augusta office on Spruce Street.

We ask for a $30 donation to cover the cost of the book and other materials. Please see the Calendar for the next upcoming Tutor Training event, or call Jenny Small at 626-3440.

Additional Training

ProLiteracy EdNet LogoVolunteer and potential volunteer tutors are encouraged to take advantage of the free courses offered through the ProLiteracy Education Network (EdNet). The service provides dozens of online professional training courses that volunteer tutors can complete at their own pace.

Trainer Certification System

The Trainer Certification System supports excellence in training by providing trainers with a path for growth and development in training skills and adult education practices. Currently, Trainer Certification and Supervising Trainer Certification are offered. To become a certified trainer, you will:

  • tutor an adult student in basic literacy or English as a Second Language (ESL), or other basic skills
  • apprentice with a certified supervising trainer
  • participate in the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LV-A) Trainer Workshop: Basic Training Skills or LV-A Training of Trainers
  • be recommended by your local literacy program

Once you are a certified trainer, you may register to become a certified supervising trainer. Certification as a supervising trainer qualifies you to mentor apprentice trainers through the certification process. To become a certified supervising trainer, you will:

  • continue to tutor an adult student in basic literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), or other basic skills
  • continue to conduct tutor training workshops
  • participate in the Supervising Trainer Workshop
  • guide an apprentice trainer through the certification process
  • be recommended by your local literacy program
Trainer certification must be renewed every three years. Certification renewal is awarded based on the trainers continued activity and development. The Certification System is explained in greater detail in the Certification Manual and Certification Team Handbook. These materials are available for purchase through New Readers Press.
