Becoming a Literacy Volunteer

You Can Help

Volunteer tutors are the foundation of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta. After completing the tutor training, volunteers tutors work with adults one-to-one, creating a very strong and unique learning partnership.

Training

Interested tutors receive intensive training through LV-A workshops offered twice a year. Trainings are generally 16 hours long, and are conducted over a series of workshops. Most affiliates offer trainings twice a year, although several offer them more frequently.

In addition, Verizon Literacy Campus offers volunteers self-paced training online at no cost. They even have several courses for the potential volunteer, including information on working with an adult literacy learner. Visit www.literacycampus.org to find out more.

Time Commitment

Once you are trained as a tutor, you will be matched with an adult learner, and begin working with them to help them achieve their literacy goals. Tutors and their students usually meet once or twice a week for 1 - 2 hours at a location that is mutually convenient, such as a library, coffee shop, or other public place.

Other volunteer positions include:

Participate on a committee, such as fundraising or planning.
Volunteer to make phone calls to update records or help with the Newsletter etc.
Join the assessment team.
Volunteer to speak at local service organizations about the issue of literacy
Help staff a Literacy Volunteers booth at area events.
Search for/write grants to benefit LVA.
Organize the library
Participate on the Board of Directors.
