You Can Help
Volunteer tutors are the foundation of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta. After completing the tutor training, volunteers tutors work with adults one-to-one, creating a very strong and unique learning partnership.
Tutoring Students
Volunteers Interested in serving as tutors receive intensive training. Through LV-A workshops offered twice a year, many volunteers participate in our Traditional Tutor Training programs. Trainings are generally 16 hours long, and are conducted over a series of workshops. Most affiliates offer trainings twice a year, although several offer them more frequently. Read more about tutor training.
The "Just in Time" tutor training approach is an alternative to the the Traditional program that we offer twice each year. Read more about Just in Time tutor training.
To find out about our training workshops check the calendar of events on our home page and contact us at info@lva-augusta.org or 626-3440.
Volunteer and potential volunteer tutors are encouraged to take advantage of the free courses offered through the ProLiteracy Education Network (EdNet). The service provides dozens of online professional training courses that volunteer tutors can complete at their own pace.
Once you are trained as a tutor, you will be matched with an adult learner, and begin working with them to help them achieve their literacy goals. Tutors and their students usually meet once or twice a week for 1 - 2 hours at a location that is mutually convenient. Usually, tutor and students meet at the LVA-Augusta office on Spruce Street in Augusta, but they may also meet in other places such as a library, coffee shop, or other public place. The LVA-Augusta office has many resources to use including the New Reader Library and personal computers.
